During this webinar, Dr. Rouzier will review the current Endocrine Society Guidelines on the use of testosterone in women (which is against testosterone use for healthy women) unless they have Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD).  This diagnosis is obtained from clinical data only and does not involve any laboratory testing.  Dr. Rouzier will describe the benefits of testosterone therapy in protecting women against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  He will also explain how guidelines by the Endocrine Society are opinions and not necessarily based on EBM.  Testosterone replacement therapy has many benefits for women besides treating HSDD.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, the healthcare professional will be able to:

  1. Review and contrast the most recent Endocrine Society Guidelines and their recommendation against the use of testosterone for healthy women unless they have HSDD.
  2. Discuss the use of testosterone levels to diagnose testosterone deficiency in women and why this is not utilized.
  3. Identify the current guidelines that testosterone use in women only be for hypoactive sexual desire disorder, a diagnosis that is only made clinically and not by laboratory test or levels.
  4. Recall guidelines that suggest treatment be based on symptoms and not lab values and that levels do not predict response to therapy.
  5. Describe the benefits of testosterone therapy in protecting against dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and loss of memory/cognition.
  6. State which testosterone levels/tests should be performed to monitor therapy and when these tests should be drawn.
  7. Identify the criteria for determining when testosterone should be utilized in post-menopausal women.
  8. Recognize that guidelines are opinions that differ from EBM.
  9. Compare and contrast the endocrine guidelines for testosterone use in women (that recommend it be used only for HSDD), with studies that demonstrate so many health benefits of testosterone use besides just using testosterone for HSDD.
