Dr. Hodis is the Harry J. Bauer and Dorothy Bauer Rawlins Professor of Cardiology, Professor of Medicine, Population and Public Health Sciences, and Molecular Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Director of the Atherosclerosis Research Unit at the University of Southern California. Dr. Hodis’ expertise includes the intersection of preventive medicine, women’s health, and cardiometabolic/vascular disease whose work led to development of the “healthy endothelium hypothesis” for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and his seminal trial validating the “timing hypothesis” of HRT for the reduction of atherosclerosis progression in early postmenopausal women. Dr. Hodis’ scientific pursuit to understand the biology and genetics of the etiology and progression of vascular disease including prevention and intervention, as well as development and application of imaging and measurement tools for assessment, screening, prevention, and treatment of atherosclerosis has been continuously NIH-funded for over 30 years. Dr. Hodis has been Principal Investigator of several single-center randomized controlled trials focused on women’s health including the Estrogen in the Prevention of Atherosclerosis Trial (EPAT), the Women's Estrogen-progestin Lipid-Lowering Hormone Atherosclerosis Regression Trial (WELL-HART), the Women’s Isoflavone Soy Health (WISH) trial, the seminal Early versus Late Intervention Trial with Estradiol (ELITE) and currently the Advancing Postmenopausal Prevention Therapy (APPT) trial, studying cardiometabolic/vascular disease, neurocognition, bone health, breast cancer, and menopausal symptoms. Dr. Hodis has been the recipient of numerous awards including Outstanding Teaching Awards, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Inventions and Contributions Board Space Act Award, and induction into the Association of American Physicians (AAP). In recognition of his contributions to women’s health research, Dr. Hodis was awarded the NAMS Thomas Clarkson Outstanding Clinical and Basic Science Research Award. Dr. Hodis serves on dissertation committees and has mentored more than 70 graduate students, delivered more than 300 invited presentations worldwide, and authored or co-authored more than 300 publications.
